<p>Now, the duo has just unveiled their next creation which is a step-up in complexity – the <strong>2941 Monopusher Split-Seconds Chronograph</strong>. Presented in a 38 mm platinum case and limited to ten pieces, the 2941 follows the design language of the 1967 with a transparent dial and an emphasis on movement finishing.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-193803" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-2.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-2.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<h3>Initial thoughts</h3>
<p>The 2941 at a glance is a conceptually impressive release that meets the high expectations resulting from its previous release. But perhaps one may ponder over the under-dial execution of the split-seconds mechanism (as opposed to a traditional approach that puts it on the back).</p>
<p>Undoubtedly, the finishing remains top notch. The movement sports numerous gracefully formed bridges and a notable emphasis on black-polished components.</p>
<p>More broadly, it is uncommon to see a new chronograph movement designed from the ground up, even more so a <em>rattrapante</em> with an instantaneously jumping minute counter.</p>
<p>That said, the movement architecture seems paradoxical. Part of the appeal of a finely-finished split-seconds chronograph is the intricate and layered view of the <em>rattrapante</em> mechanism on top of the chronograph seen through a display case back.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-193800" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-3.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="2400" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-3.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-3-200x300.jpg 200w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-3-1067x1600.jpg 1067w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-3-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-3-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-3-1365x2048.jpg 1365w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>Thus, Petermann Bedat&#8217;s approach of installing the split-seconds under the dial is questionable, particularly considering the near-US$265,000 price tag. This is reminiscent of the industrial approach used by Breitling and Franck Muller that places a split-second module on the base chronograph movement under the dial – paradoxical considering the quality of finish found in the 2941.</p>
<p>This makes the price of CHF243,000 before taxes (equivalent to US$265,000 today) a little steep, despite the elaborate finish and unique architecture.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s the inevitable comparison with another independent watchmaker, Atelier de Chronométrie. While arguably not as meticulously finish and also not original since it&#8217;s a reworked vintage Venus 185, the <a href="https://watchesbysjx.com/2020/06/atelier-de-chronometrie-adc-8-split-seconds-chronograph.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Atelier de Chronométrie AdC#8</a> cost less than half the 2941.</p>
<p>That said, the 2941 is within the ballpark for as such things, namely a high-end, in-house split-seconds built as a limited run by an independent watchmaker.</p>
<div id="attachment_193794" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-193794" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-193794 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-Movement-2.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1600" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-Movement-2.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-Movement-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-Movement-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-Movement-2-768x768.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-Movement-2-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-Movement-2-32x32.jpg 32w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-193794" class="wp-caption-text">The split seconds mechanism that is hidden under the dial</p></div>
<h3>Modern case</h3>
<p>As with the 1967, the 2941 dial is centred on a clear sapphire chapter ring with a centre in frosted platinum. While the clear chapter ring reveals the chronograph mechanism and keyless works, the platinum centre unfortunately hides the key element under the dial – the <em>rattrapante</em> mechanism. This ends up defeating one of the reasons for having the split-seconds mechanism under the dial.</p>
<p>The design element that jumps out are the oversized registers. The constant seconds is located at nine o’clock, mirroring the instantaneously jumping minutes register at three. Both sub-dials are large enough to be almost as wide as the radius of the dial, giving it something of a googly-eyed look.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-193805" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-3.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="2400" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-3.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-3-200x300.jpg 200w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-3-1067x1600.jpg 1067w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-3-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-3-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-3-1365x2048.jpg 1365w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>The 2941 is a monopusher <em>rattrapante</em> with the start-stop pusher located coaxially within the crown at three o’clock. Meanwhile, the <em>rattrapante</em> pusher is located at ten o’clock &#8211; this button &#8220;splits&#8221; the blued <em>rattrapante</em> hand that is otherwise hidden under the gold chronograph seconds hand.</p>
<p>Despite the notable complication, the 2941 comes packed in a modestly-sized, 38 mm platinum case that stands 13.7 mm, giving it dimensions similar to the 1967.</p>
<p>The case profile is notably modern and sleek, having tapered lugs that slope diagonally outwards, creating the impression of a trapezoid case middle. Likewise, the <em>rattrapante</em> pusher at ten o’clock takes the form of a parallelogram, further enhancing the sleekness. The bezel has a slightly domed sapphire crystal, making the 13.7 mm thickness appear relatively svelte.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-193797" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-1.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-1.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<h3><strong>Integrated, monopusher <em>rattrapante</em></strong></h3>
<p>Of course, the highlight of the 2941 is the cal. 202 within – a 30 mm-diameter, monopusher split-seconds chronograph with an instantaneous jumping minute counter.</p>
<p>Unlike most high-end <em>rattrapantes</em> on the market, the cal. 202 is designed with the chronograph and <em>rattrapante</em> mechanisms split between the front and back of the movement. Thus, while most of the conventional chronograph mechanisms are visible through the display back, the monopusher actuation lever and <em>rattrapante</em> mechanisms are located under the dial.</p>
<p>This implies that a future variant of the movement sans <em>rattrapante</em> is easily feasible, since the <em>rattrapante</em> parts can be removed, although that would leave an empty space hidden under the dial centre.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-193740" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-4.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1600" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-4.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-4-300x300.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-4-150x150.jpg 150w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-4-768x768.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-4-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Monopusher-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-4-32x32.jpg 32w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>Visible through the display back is a lateral-clutch monopusher chronograph. Partly thanks to the column wheel actuation lever being located on the other side, this allows the chronograph components to be spaced out, emphasising the thin and slender steel levers.</p>
<p>In contrast, most manual-wind <em>rattrapante</em> movements have their maximum height around the centre due to the split-seconds mechanism and a high density of components, resulting in a beautifully intricate view especially when the parts are well-finished. It may be a missed opportunity for Petermann Bédat not to have have gone with a traditional <em>rattrapante</em> construction that would have fully showcased its finishing.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-193804" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-2.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-2.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>And the finishing is exemplary. The steel components are instance are constructed with many curves and inner angles, and then finished with black polishing, making them a highlight of the movement. The black polishing even extends to the curved detent springs that are visible throughout the movement in an almost-organic layout.</p>
<p>A signature design element carried over from the 1967 movement are the arrowheads. Here they are most prominent on the lateral clutch lever and minute counter impulse isolator.</p>
<p>A notable detail of Petermann Bédat movements are the exceptionally large jewel bearings in huge countersinks – here the largest of them supports the barrel and sits in a massive countersink that is framed by two of the chronograph levers encircling it in a figure-of-eight shape.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-193802" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-1.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-1.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Petermann-Bedat-2941-Split-Seconds-Chronograph-movement-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>

<p>Unusually, the brand made its debut in a gradual manner, having shown its first prototype in 2018 before launching the final version of its debut watch <a href="https://watchesbysjx.com/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">earlier this year</a>. Even more unusually, the successive iterations of the 1967 progressively improved, in both style and finish, to a point where the production version of the watch is simply marvellous.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101091" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-8.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-8.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-8-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-8-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-8-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-8-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<h3>Initial thoughts</h3>
<p>When I saw a prototype of the 1967 last year, I didn&#8217;t think much of the design, but the movement was clearly well done, even in as a half-finished prototype.</p>
<p>Rather than massaging the earlier design into better shape, Petermann Bedat ditched it in favour of what you see here. Best described as a modern take on the fashionably retro &#8220;sector&#8221; dial, the dial looks good and also shows off the brilliant finishing.</p>
<p>The decoration visible on the front hints at the quality of work, and the movement visible from the back confirms it. In the smallest details the greatest finesse is visible, in the sharp points of the deadbeat seconds anchor or the escape wheel bridge below the balance.</p>
<p>Crucially, the watch pictured is a prototype &#8211; amongst other things, the hands are incorrect and the wheels for the deadbeat seconds mechanism are not perfectly finished &#8211; yet it is obvious the quality of execution is excellent.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101096" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-13.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-13.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-13-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-13-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-13-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-13-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>Beyond its tangible qualities, the 1967 also appeals for blends elements new and old, a feat that few classically-inclined watches manage to do well. The dial, for instance, is a twist on the &#8220;sector&#8221; dial that smartly reveals the gorgeous keyless works. And the movement incorporates a deadbeat seconds mechanism designed in the 1940s by a teacher in a Swiss watchmaking school.</p>
<p>All of that comes in at a bit under 60,000 Swiss francs, or about US$66,000. It&#8217;s great value as such things go.</p>

<div id="attachment_101109" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-101109" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-101109 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-1.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-1.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-101109" class="wp-caption-text">The 1967 prototype of 2019</p></div>
<p>That said, the watch is not perfect, but the niggles are minor. I would have preferred a thinner-looking case &#8211; making it actually thinner is not possible due to the movement height &#8211; and perhaps more stylised lines for the case design. A longer power reserve than its 36 hours would also be useful.</p>
<p>But the 1967 is tremendous watch, especially from a new brand founded by two watchmakers under 30. It&#8217;s proof that Messrs Petermann and Bédat, despite their youth, have both artisanal skill and a good eye. They know what they are doing, and what they do next will be worth watching.</p>
<h3>The brand</h3>
<p>Just three years old, the brand is named after its Gaël Petermann and Florian Bédat. Both just 28 years old, the pair met at watchmaking school in Geneva, and also at A. Lange &amp; Söhne, where they spent some of their formative years. Both then spent a few years doing restoration and servicing; Mr Petermann, for instance, was often called upon to overhaul timepieces going on the block at Christie&#8217;s in Geneva.</p>
<div id="attachment_101111" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-101111" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-101111 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/gael-petermann-florian-bedat.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/gael-petermann-florian-bedat.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/gael-petermann-florian-bedat-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/gael-petermann-florian-bedat-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/gael-petermann-florian-bedat-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/gael-petermann-florian-bedat-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-101111" class="wp-caption-text">Florian Bédat (left) and Gaël Petermann</p></div>
<p>In 2017 they joined forces, establishing Petermann Bédat in Renens, the town where Mr Petermann was already located. The choice of location was not accidental: their workshop sits beside the premises of Dominique Renaud, a cofounder of complications specialist Renaud &amp; Papi who more recently set up his own brand (which has unfortunately gone bust). Mr Renaud helped construct the cal. 171 in the 1967, and in return the two watchmakers did work for Mr Renaud&#8217;s brand.</p>
<h3>Evolution</h3>
<p>Having been in development for several years, the 1967 has evolved considerably since an early prototype was shown in 2018. It has been artfully refined, both in terms of design and movement decoration, resulting in a watch that is considerably more appealing than its earlier iterations.</p>
<p>The evolution of the 1967 is itself notable, for independent watchmakers, like many artists, regard their creations as unrivalled in beauty and unsurpassed in inventiveness. So they rarely make substantial changes to designs, regardless of what anyone says.</p>
<div id="attachment_101110" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-101110" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-101110 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-2.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1066" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-2.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/petermann-bedat-1967-prototype-2-1536x1023.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-101110" class="wp-caption-text">The earliest prototype for the 1967 (left) and last year&#8217;s version</p></div>
<p>But the general reaction to the prior dial designs for the 1967 was mixed at best. Even last year&#8217;s version, which was fairly elaborate, lacked character and did not do justice to the movement, which was already impressive despite being a work in progress.</p>
<p>Fortunately, the pair revamped the dial design with the help of Nicolas Barth Nussbaumer, a longtime watch designer in Neuchâtel. The dial that&#8217;s now on the watch is an unusual mix of old and new, while also managing to show off a good deal of the under-dial finishing.</p>
<div id="attachment_89224" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-89224" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-89224 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-89224" class="wp-caption-text">The movement in the 2019 prototype</p></div>
<h3>Open &#8220;sector&#8221;</h3>
<p>Although both the movement and dial of the 1967 have been refined a great deal, the case is largely identical to the original design. It&#8217;s unsurprisingly, since it is a simple but effective design.</p>
<p>Granted the case design is neither outstanding nor special, but it serves the purpose well. The lines of the case are clean and unfussy, giving it a low-key look that directs attention to the dial.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101101" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-18.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1066" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-18.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-18-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-18-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-18-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-18-1536x1023.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>It is 39 mm in diameter, and 10.7 mm high &#8211; not thick but it feels so for two reasons. One is the relatively small diameter, and the other are the flattish bezel and back, which makes the case middle taller. But it still sits well on the wrist, feeling like a compact, high-quality watch, much like a Voutilainen Vingt-8 for instance.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101107" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-24.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-24.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-24-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-24-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-24-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-24-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>

<p>In contrast to the case, the dial design is interesting, managing to blend classical design and mechanical elements in a coherent manner. It is clear sapphire topped with a central plate and minute-track ring, both made of steel. Printed hour markers on the sapphire form the &#8220;sector&#8221; layout, and also give the dial an appealing sense of depth.</p>

<p>Because the markers are thickly printed in glossy black lacquer, they cast noticeable shadows on the base plate below. At a steeper angle, the shadow cast by the central plate of the dial is also visible, which enhances the effect.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101103" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-20.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-20.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-20-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-20-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-20-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-20-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101088" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-5.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1066" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-5.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-5-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-5-1536x1023.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>The dial design smartly allows the two watchmakers to show off decoration on the front without being excessive in styling. The standout detail is between one and four o&#8217;clock, where the levers of the keyless works are revealed.</p>
<p>Basically the mechanism that allows the crown to engage in two different positions to wind and set the movement, the keyless works are beautifully executed in form and decoration. All of the steel levers are black-polished and outlined with polished bevels on the edges. Even the tension spring has bevelled edges that continue as it narrows, with the bevelling ending only where the spring is impossibly thin.</p>

<p>Though not part of the movement, steel minute track and central plate are equally well finished. Both have a finely frosted top surface and wide, pronounced bevels that are mirror polished.</p>
<p>Beyond the finishing, the dial construction is also fairly complex, despite the straightforward design. The ring with the minute track is held in place with two screws that go through the sapphire disc and secure the ring to the base plate. And the central plate has four pins on its underside so it seats correctly on the sapphire disc, and is held in place with a bit of adhesive.</p>

<h3>Calibre 171</h3>
<p>The key features of the movement in the 1967 are obvious as soon as you turn the watch over: a hand-wind movement with an elaborately constructed secondary escapement for the deadbeat seconds that&#8217;s mounted on the three-quarter plate.</p>
<p>Because the deadbeat seconds escapement fairly high over the three-quarter plate, the movement has a degree of depth not usually seen in a time-only watch. That&#8217;s best appreciated up close, but it is impressive, particularly in how the polished components reflect on each other.</p>

<p>The operation of the deadbeat seconds escapement is easy to grasp once observed. As outlined in our <a href="https://watchesbysjx.com/2020/05/jumping-deadbeat-seconds-explained.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">recent article on the deadbeat seconds complication</a>, the jumping seconds in the 1967 relies on &#8220;a secondary escapement driven by the fourth wheel of the going train. At the centre of the secondary escapement is a four-armed anchor with four jewel pallets that converts the continuous motion of the gear train into the jumping of the seconds hand.&#8221;</p>
<div id="attachment_89974" style="width: 730px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-89974" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-89974 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-escapement.gif" alt="" width="720" height="480" /><p id="caption-attachment-89974" class="wp-caption-text">The unusual Petermann Bédat escapement relies on a two-sided anchor (with four arms tipped with arrows) gently rocking back and forth as it locks and unlocks on each side: As the fourth wheel (extreme left) rotates, the ratchet wheel on the left rotates with it, sliding one pallet on the anchor out along the way. The oscillation of the anchor causes the opposing pair of pallets to lock and unlock the adjacent spring-loaded ratchet wheel sequentially, advancing the seconds hand in one-second steps. Video – Petermann Bédat</p></div>
<p>Defined by the four sharp arrowheads on the two-sided anchor, the deadbeat seconds mechanism has an intricate, old-school construction that brings to mind an earlier era of watchmaking &#8211; perhaps early 20th century or even 19th century. Unsurprisingly, that is where its origins lie: the mechanism is modelled on one invented by Robert Gafner, who taught at the La Chaux-de-Fonds watchmaking school in the 1940s.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101097" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-14.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1066" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-14.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-14-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-14-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-14-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Petermann-Bedat-1967-Deadbeat-Seconds-review-14-1536x1023.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>Specifically, Petermann Bedat based their movement on a 1949 pocket watch built by Rene Fesselet, a student at the school (who was presumably a student of Gafner). The pocket watch was equipped with a tourbillon, <em>remontoir d&#8217;egalite</em> constant force mechanism, and a deadbeat seconds driven by the Gafner mechanism. Clearly conceived as a top-of-the-line precision timekeeper, the 1949 pocket watch was given a deadbeat seconds for an obvious reason: the ability to read and set the seconds hand exactly.</p>
<p>In the 1967, on the other hand, the deadbeat seconds operates in isolation; it is the only complication in the movement. That perhaps is the only weakness of the watch from a conceptual perspective. For one, the jumping seconds is for visual effect rather than working in tandem with a <em>remontoir</em> for instance. At the same time, the jumping seconds is a drag on performance as it consumes a substantial amount of energy from the mainspring, explaining the short, 36-hour power reserve.</p>
<p>But its shortcomings are easily forgiven because the movement is outstanding in design and decoration. As the components visible through the dial already imply, the movement finishing is exemplary. The most obvious example of the excellent finishing is the deadbeat seconds mechanism. It&#8217;s held in place by a wide bridge with a frosted top and <em>anglage</em> that naturally incorporates several sharp, inward corners.</p>

<h3>Concluding thoughts</h3>
<p>In the category of time-only watches by independent watchmakers, the 1967 is amongst the best, most obviously in its finish and quality, but also its design.</p>
<p>A couple of things can be improved, most prominently the case, but none of the potential improvements are crucial to the appeal of the watch. It is a winner, particularly in light of its more-than-fair price.</p>

Mechanically identical to the prototype &#8211; it&#8217;s equipped a secondary escapement for the jumping seconds &#8211; the refined 1967 now has a partially-open dial that shows off the finely-finished keyless works.</p>
<h3>Initial thoughts</h3>
<p>The prototype 1967 deadbeat seconds was let down by an uninspiring faux-classical dial, which was a shame, because the movement was executed to an impressively high level.</p>
<p>Fortunately, Messrs Petermann and Bedat embarked on a total redesign of the dial. Independent watchmakers don&#8217;t often make drastic changes to designs in response to criticism, but the two did so, and the result is a success.</p>
<p>The new 1967 is a handsome watch that manages to look modern while evoking classical dial design. In fact, the new dial is essentially a &#8220;sector&#8221; dial with a sapphire chapter ring, a novel combination that has not been done before. And it is matched with Petermann Bédat&#8217;s take on classical lance-shaped hands, which complete the contemporary feel.</p>
<div id="attachment_92966" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-92966" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-92966 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1600" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1-600x600.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-1-32x32.jpg 32w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-92966" class="wp-caption-text">The new 1967 in rose gold. <p>Dial aside, the rest of the watch is largely identical to the prototype. The movement was already excellent and will be almost unchanged in the production versions, although Mr Petermann says that the engraved lettering on the three-quarter plate will be improved.</p>
<p>Priced at little under 60,000 Swiss francs, which is about US$63,000, the 1967 is fairly priced for the complication and quality. And it is also an unconventional offering from a <em>haute horlogerie</em> independent. Although the deadbeat seconds is fairly common amongst affordable watches &#8211; Austrian independent Habring2 has made a specialty of jumping-seconds watches priced below US$10,000 &#8211; it is uncommon at the high end.</p>
<div id="attachment_89224" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-89224" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-89224 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/petermann-bedat-deadbeat-seconds-cal-171-movement-1-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-89224" class="wp-caption-text">The cal. 171 in the prototype</p></div>
<h3>Petermann and Bédat, with help from Renaud</h3>
<p>Founded by Gaël Petermann and Florian Bédat, both Swiss watchmakers who spent several years working for A. Lange &amp; Söhne (and Mr Petermann then <a href="https://watchesbysjx.com/2020/05/svend-andersen-custom-bespoke-world-time-watch.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">worked for Svend Andersen</a>), the brand was founded in 2017. The duo set up shop in the town of Renens, adjacent to the workshop of Dominique Renaud, the watchmaker best known for cofounding Renaud &amp; Papi, the complications specialist now owned by Audemars Piguet.</p>
<p>With Mr Renaud&#8217;s help, the two young watchmakers constructed the cal. 171 in the 1967 wristwatch. The movement has an elaborately constructed independent going train and escapement for the jumping seconds, which is contained under a large, frosted steel bridge over the three-quarter plate.</p>
<p>The jumping, or deadbeat, seconds is also what gives the watch its name: 1967 was the year the first prototypes of quartz movements were debuted in both Switzerland and Japan. And the defining trait of a quartz movement has long been a seconds hand that ticks forward in one-second steps, which is exactly what the 1967 does, except it accomplishes it entirely mechanically.</p>

<h3>A new look</h3>
<p>Clearly a 21st century design with vintage influences, the face-lifted 1967 is a better-looking watch than the original. The new dial is essentially a two-part construction &#8211; a central portion in brass that&#8217;s been frosted and then bevelled by hand, which is ringed by a clear sapphire chapter ring that carries the hour markings.</p>
<div id="attachment_92967" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-92967" decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-92967 size-full" src="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-2.jpg" alt="" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-2.jpg 1600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https://watchesbysjx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/petermann-bedat-1967-deadbeat-seconds-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-92967" class="wp-caption-text">The jewelled bearings for the escape (upper) and seconds wheel. Photo &#8211; Petermann Bédat</p></div>
<p>The central portion also has cut-outs for three jewelled bearings on the main plate that contain the lower pivots for the escape wheel, mainspring arbour, and respectively.</p>
<p>But the highlight on the front is probably the levers of the keyless works, which are all in black-polished steel and visible between two and four o&#8217;clock.</p>
<p>To go with the dial, the pair also designed a new style of hands that are lanced shaped, but characterised by wide, flat top and sloping, bevelled flanks. Though the outline of the hands are old school, the details give them a space age feel.</p>

<p>Available in white or rose gold, the case remains the same as on the prototype.</p>
<p>It is a moderate, usable size, measuring 39 mm wide and 10.7 mm high. The height is a little more than the average for time-only watches of this genre, a result of the thickness of the movement, which includes the additional height of the deadbeat seconds train.</p>
<p>The 1967 is limited to 10 pieces in each case metal.</p>
